DECODING GENDER CODE

 WHAT IS GENDER CODE?

gender code

Before tuning into the file The Codes of Gender, I had no idea really what gender code was or what I actually was about to watch. The only thing that I partially associated it with was the words, female and male. I did a little bit more research just to make myself aware of what I will be watching. I looked into the definition of gender coding. I came across the meaning  of a term used in assigning particular traits or behaviors exclusively or prominently for males or females. (gender coding). I figured now I was ready and educated on what gender coding meant. But I totally was taught and educated a lot more after watching this film.

WATCHING THE CODES OF GENDER

While watching the film my reaction stayed in awe state. I didn't realize in my 37 years that some of this information stated sat in front of my eyes the whole time. Quite honestly, I never paid attention to the divide of gender. All I've ever notice was boy or girl or male or female. I guess it's safe to say that I fell into the category of  associating certain things in life with a male or a female solely. The strange thing about it especially after watching the film is that for me personally even though I wear pink and  have no problem what so ever with wearing pink, I associate that color with it being a female color if I displace myself out the situation. I actually love the color pink but if I was to go to a baby shower and see the color pink for decorations, I would automatically assume that the baby is a girl.  The film opened up my eyes truly, especially at the beginning of the film. If I recall the little girl ask the person. "are you a boy or a girl".  I found that very interesting for a little kid to ask that but that also open up my eyes to people potentially see things different or don't see things at all. Immediately reflected to the popular picture, I believe of the woman in the picture some people see a old woman and some people see a younger woman.  But then there is people that don't see either.
Optical Illusion

I reflect to this picture solely because I think to myself is that how people actually see people. Like I stated before some only see the young woman and some see the old lady. Then there is a select few that see both. I see that happening todays society with people. Mainly it's either one or the other. And only a few people see nothing. What is the correct answer? Maybe the people that don't see anything has the correct answer.  Things are changing in the world for the better. Ironically as I was watching the film for this course, I had my TV on as well. A commercial caught my attention as it related to directly what the film was speaking upon.  True Name. This directly associates with gender code. I ask myself now who comes up with what are boys or girls name. Why can't we choose whatever name we want  to be our names. At the end of the day, names are names and maybe it shouldn't define or represent if you are a male or female.

WHAT HAVE I'VE LEARNED?

There is still a lot to learn when it comes to gender coding. But I can say my eyes are now open more to see actually what gender coding is referred to. Who knew taking a picture a certain way equated to you being a male or a female. Or in advertisement that they way you held something made it more masculine or lady like. For me at the end of the day if you are a die hard  football it should matter or people shouldn't assume that you or a guy. Or if your favorite color is pink, it acceptable for that the be a guys favorite color.

  1. I really like that you brought up the optical illusion as a parallel to how people perceive the world around them. It truly shows that while the same thing may be in front of us, how our body works and the things we have gone through affect how we react.

  2. Hi Brian,
You and I have a very similar opinion. I also did not know how gender played a huge role in our society until I got married to my wife. There are some things that I didn't know it was even a stereotypes from your picture you included in the article.

  3. Really interesting commercial! Names on credit cards ! Great job on reflecting on this topic. You seem to really have thought deeply about the visual codes. Recall that for Foucault, these rules are like a societal discourse, hidden rules about what is expected. We can even hear these rules expressed in music, indirectly teaching us what it means to be male or female. Males are constantly taught to be hyper-masculine, to be tough, etc. This can lead to deep trouble in males who want to not follow these hidden rules.
